Title: Spring Renewal
Post by: gleauzinier on February 09, 2005, 12:26:58 PM
Due to popular demand the Swope Spring Renewal will be returning to our beloved Gully Golf Course. The date being tossed around is May 14th, since that is Mother's Day all mothers will play free.  Since this date is less than a month before the Wide Open it should also serve as a tuneup for the big show.
Watch this space for workdate postings, in the meantime help improve your course by picking up trash. (Hint: cigarette butts are trash).
We'll be recycling as much of the aluminum as possible this year, the money will come back to the Tuesday league in October.

have a big one,

Woo Hoo.......The Spring Renewal is coming back after a few years of neglect. That's great to hear. I love the date as well as it co-insides with my 30th birthday. Please keep me informed on work days, or anything else needed to make this event happen.

Please do "Your" part in keep our courses green. Pick up trash that you see laying on the ground even if you didn't put it there. Cigerette butts are the number one pollutant in the U.S. So if you smoke on the course, please just knock the cherry off and put the butt in a thrash can or your golf bag and if you don't want to get your bag dirty put them in your pocket. I spent a considerable amount of time the last two years picking up other people's cigarette butts.

Remember the Parks and Rec giveth and the Parks and Rec taketh away!

Title: so much going on!
Post by: gleauzinier on February 18, 2005, 09:00:56 AM
dr. jack lowe and I attended a meeting 2/17 about the Master Plan for swope.
the overall improvements to the park will have little impact on the course itself. there are plans to make the intersection of elmwood and gregory safer and landscape the corner around 16.

as part of the Front Door District, "...landscaped open spaces, Starlight Theater, the Zoo, daily use amenities, and historical elements.", the description and recommendations for the disc golf course: "The rolling terrain and dense tree canopy of this area have become home to a top flight 18-hole disc golf course. The course hosts many professional disc golf tournaments as well as regional and local tournaments.
Recommendations:
Construct two small ponds to serve as water hazards for the course; and Provide new tree plantings for planned succession of the existing mature trees."
we also brought to their attention the hillsides that seem to have broken water lines. maybe we should have a get together for the parks folks when things warm up, give them a chance to walk the course.

as an aside, jack told me that 5/14 is the date of the city's biggest disc golf day being held at rosedale. watch this space for more info.

WOW sounds like some great things are about to happen at the city's oldest course.

How about moving the Spring Re-Newal to March 26th or April 2/3rd?
Or should I give up on playing a tournament there altogether this year?
Not playing in the Wide Open, and just wanted to get an old tradition going again.
Title: NAME THAT TOURNAMENT!
Post by: gleauzinier on February 22, 2005, 09:13:36 AM
due to both ignorance and indifference on the part of your course custodian we need to find a new name for the spring gala.
in the interest of evolution I am proposing a naming contest, the winner getting free entry into the tournament. all kansas residents are excluded given that in that state evolution is but theory.
all suggestions can be posted here or thrown at us at the park.
spin on!

Title: What's up with the name?
Post by: eupher61 on February 23, 2005, 11:13:52 AM
um, Maurice?   Would you please ask Stiles to post what happened with the name?

the Summer Solstice ain't until June, so that's no problem.  Surely no one trademarked "Swope Spring Fling"?

but, no matter what, how about the Mother Of All Disc Days Tournament, Social, and Beer Blast?

Or how about for those who prefer generic productions SWOPE SPRING TOURNY.

the original name is still intact. since the course is evolving it seems only fitting that the words chosen to lure eager participants do so as well.

how bout the Swope Spring Fling Zing Sling Bling Wing Ding A Go Go?
hopefully Ching will be one of the sponsors.

I vote for this one.

We can sell discs, tee-shirts and bumper stickers that say:
"I tossed my cookies at The 1st Annual Spring Fling Bling Bling"

Let's go with something we'll be proud of in 30 years.

We could get away from the whole spring theme all together.....set the course up short to medium/short.......call it "The Birdie King Classic".....and rip off Burger Kings logo for merchandise.....see who gets closest to 18 under and declare the winner The Birdie King.

just a thought.....

please don't feel like any of you can use geauzinier without at least one circle R behind it.
years and years of market research went into the creation of that name and if you knew any of the history associated with it you'd have a heck of a lot more respect for it. or maybe you see right thru it and realize it's almost as important as what brand of plastic you throw. doesn't everyone know that discraft is the only way to fly?

Well.....we could put the course in the Gold setup and call it the Swope "GOLD" Drive.  I mean what a better way to shake off the winter rust....lots of opportunities to work on a large variety of shots....

or

We do it on Sunday and call it the Swope Sunday Drive.

Just a couple of thoughts....

(I actually kind of liked Swope Spring Gala)

Gold Rope, let me think about it   ummmmm NO! It takes forever to put that rope out and bring back in, trust me I know from exprience. Besides there are enough obsticles out there that I don't feel we need to add more artifical OB's. I would rather see a shorter course as to get less exprienced players to come out and have fun. Maybe even some of our  lady players as well.

Besides WyCo is going to be a gold course this year for the Wide Open.

On another note, how about the Cow Town Open.........put cow print on everything......with some kind of slogan using mooooo!
Title: Spring Renewal
Post by: gleauzinier on March 02, 2005, 08:04:52 AM
who said anything about gold rope? heaven forbid we offer a challenging course to those who want to experience something beyond pitch and putt.

looking at the calendar we don't have many dates that won't conflict with other regional events. end of march beginning of may? when do you all want to do this thing?
Title: Spring Renewal
Post by: Mike Penney on March 02, 2005, 10:04:58 AM
Sorry I guess I misunderstood.......I read gold and thought about that darn rope.......personally I'm not really oppossed to any settings........looking at the schedule of events I think April 30-May 1st would be best, but Mo-Kan is planning an event that same weekend at Water Works......or in between the DUI and the WyCo events would be good as well........maybe we can talk Mo-Kan into changing parks for thier event.......I would perfer not to have back to back events....even the end of May looks good.....all the "pro's" will most likely be in NE....and it will give us a chance to see what shape the course is in before the WO....

Title: Spring Renewal
Post by: Mike Penney on March 04, 2005, 11:31:51 AM
Well here's the info I have on tournaments........

March
19th - GDS Tour (Mo-Kan) Rosedale
20th - Down Under Invitational (KCFDC) Rosedale

April
9th Kan U WyCo (OZ Tour) WyCo
10th Tin Mans Forest (OZ Tour) Ted's Dread
16th Mighty Mo Challenage PDGA (KCFDC) Cliff Drive/Water Works
23-24th Redbud Open  Ted's Dread
30th Bling Bling or something to that effect... (Mo-Kan) Water Works

May
14-15 Wolrds/City's Biggest (KCFDC) Rosedale

So that leaves March 26th (Easter is the 27th), and April 2-3rd (daylight savings is the 3rd),and May 1st open.....personally April 3rd is looking the best to me...

Well it appears that May 14th and 15th is an open date again as the Kansas City Disc Day is going to be May 21st. This would be an excellent time to sell some beer at the park......maybe we can get Stiles talked into it....hmmmm.....

now all we need is a name.

see page one. let the naming contest begin. let's be serious about the suggestions, after all we are defining the one day process of several people throwing plastic objects at metal sculptures.
it's a new day at swope. it's about playing disc golf rather than just talking about it.

At the moment it's on the events calender as the Bull Run......but can and will change when someone supplies a better name. If that doesn't happen then I suppose I could get some Red Bull......and it will just be named after the sponcer..

in honor of the former "doby" hole (now #12) and or the "elephant walk" hole of yore...

The Doby Dash, or

 the Elephant Dung Ding Day

or...Swope Disc Golf Revival, barbecue, beer blast, and bake sale.

depends on your definition of "bake" , I guess.

Just trying to cram too many events into a short amount of time. Hopefully the calender will allow for an event to happen later in the year after all the PDGA events are over.
