Title: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: DDKC Scott Reek on May 02, 2012, 03:36:23 PM
I will post more information once I put it together (very soon), but the Mighty Mo is taking place on June 16th, 2012.  We will be using Cliff Drive and Waterworks.  This will be a KCFDC event and a PDGA B Tier event.

Just curious but is Scott Reek the same person from Topeka that moved to Wisconsin and is now back in Kansas City?  My memory is foggy but I do remember a Scott Reek in Topeka.

Hello all,

online registration should open up and a flyer posted anyday now for the Might Mo.  I am looking forward to an event on these two courses.  I did goof up and say this is a B Tier and it will be a C Tier.  I apologize for that mix up.

Registration will be available at dynamicdiscs.com or at the DDKC Shop.  Pre-registration is highly encouraged.

I am also hoping to have the courses set up right after the KCWO.

I will be setting up Cliff Drive probably tonight in the Mighty Mo configuration....
1-Original
2-Short
3-Original
4-Original
5-Short
6-Original
7-Long
8-Long
9-Original
10-Middle (too many issues going long during Tourney Play)
11-Long
12-Original (this will be ISLAND RULES, In BOUNDS or goto DROP ZONE after drive, you may only go to your disc after you are INBOUNDS, if your second shot goes OB from the drop zone, your next shot is from the DROP ZONE, where you are throwing for 5....after landing back inbounds from the DROP ZONE you may apply regular OB rules to subsequent shots)
13-Long
14-Long
15-Short
16-Long
17-Island (On the green or DROP ZONE after 2nd shot....if you go off the green and go OB from the drop zone, you throw again from the DROP ZONE, you may only move to the Island after your shot lands on the Island.  If you go off the Island after being on the Island, regular OB rules apply. IF your second shot goes OB past the DROP ZONE, you still go back to the DROP ZONE for all subsequent shots.  In other words, your second shot hits the tree by the road on the peninsula location, and goes OB to the right on the road, you go to the DROP ZONE still....)
18-Original

I will work on getting the distances set up for this for you Scott.  I am playing a round out there tonight to fix #7's chains and will move the few pins that need to go in the proper location.

Thanks,

Jack

No we will meet at Cliff Drive and play cliff the 1st round and then move to Waterworks for the Second Round
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: jack on June 04, 2012, 01:12:36 PM
Scott, I know that we discussed this a little bit, but I do feel that you will be better served having the players meeting at Water Works in the morning.  I think that the afternoon traffic at WW on Saturday could be heavy, and would be much easier to control at Cliff, and less stress to you/staff.

I would suggest Water Works in the am, and then Cliff in the PM.  But that is just me!! ;D

I am going to try to mow #2-#8 this week, and clear up the side of #8 some before the event.

Then it will be so ... We will play Waterworks the first round and cliff drive the second round.  Cliff is set up for the Might Mo and I will work on getting Waterworks set up for the Mighty Mo as well

It would depend on pre-registration.  If i have over 72 pre-registered, we might create pools between courses otherwise the event would be capped at 90.

I did get close one year, and moved the field to both courses.....so it can be done!  Scott, I think that it makes it much easier on you to not worry about the casuals on the Water Works in the Afternoon, so I think that you made a good choice!

HooRAY! ;D

more people are likely to hang out afterwards and socialize and have a few beverages if it were second round at WW, instead of beat feet outta Cliff...

Closing one course for 3.5 hours, to the random chuckers, is Ok in this town, there's more to go play!!!

I cleaned up around #1, and #2 this weekend, as well as #17 island Green.  I painted all the way around the green on there, the sidewalk behind the green is OB, but painted in all areas, if you land far enough out that you can't see the paint, you may use your best judgement on the OB lines.

The OB lines are Pink/or last year's yellow.  I tried to re-do it with Pink if the yellow faded, but please use the yellow OB lines as the marker.

I am hopeful to get to #3, and #4 fairway this week to clean them up a touch, Looked at #8, I need a crew out there with me to feel that impact, and will want to do that soon.......so it won't get the love needed by me (off the tee, and by the long pin need some cleaning up on the shagginess.....)

Tonight will be playing league with the layout for Saturday.

Thanks,

Jack

Joe shot a 53, CD and Billy Nelson shot a 54, Jamie Danger and myself shot a 56.  I figure 52 should be close to 1000, I think that a 48 is possible out there.....hitting everything, and playing smart.

The Blue Line (KC's only hockey bar) has donated a $20 gift certifcate for food for a CTP prize on hole #2 at Cliff during the second round.  http://thebluelinekc.com/ (http://thebluelinekc.com/) located in River Market, it is less than 5 minutes from the course.  529 Walnut Street  Kansas City, MO 64106.  On top of this, they donated 2 pilsner glasses to go to the next 2 closest individuals, so be sure to put your name and distance on there when you get to that hole!

I may try to work with them on a discount for lunch in between rounds, as it is located in between the 2 courses as well.  I just didn't think about it last night!

Thanks,

Jack

Blue line will have a disc golf special for $5 you can get the hummus plate (very good), and then they will have a secret $2 blue line draft if you mention that you are a disc golfer.  I am going to be bringing out menu's as well, so if you want to order food as you leave Water Works, it will be ready for you when you come in.  Its a perfect location for the event.

Thanks,

Jack

Partly cloudy in the morning followed by scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. A few storms may be severe.
High 91F. Winds SSW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

I recommend playing Cliff Drive the first round due to impending weather tomorrow afternoon.  That way we can get it out of the way, hopefully before the storms arrive and avoid the treacherous footing on the front nine.

I do not disagree but since the event is less than 24 hours away, i don't think i could get to all of the players that already know it is starting at Waterworks.

First round is at Waterworks and then Cliff Drive.  Check in is between 8-9 at Waterworks

Pre-Registration is now over 50

I second both Cooper and Dan Z's comments.  It would have been a little better if we had teed off a little earlier, say 9:00 or 9:15am.  But overall I had a lot of fun even though Cliff always kicks my butt.

Great tournament overall..a little unseasonably warm, but no rain!
I would have liked to finish at Waterworks, there's just little relief from the heat at Cliff. I know we would have had a problem with all the casual players out at Waterworks in the afternoon since they had no warning about the course being closed.
I also like the 10am start and the 1 1/2 hour lunch although if we had a rain delay it might have been tough getting finished before dark.

Was just looking at the PDGA's website and I see cliff drive was played as a par 54? Is that correct? Will it affect how the ratings are scored? Pretty sure it wasn't in a par 54 setup.
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: phisherman_77 on July 03, 2012, 09:46:39 AM
Par doesn't mean anything really.

Scores and participating player ratings are what's important.

I'm not 100000000% sure on this, but Timko can probably chime in with some more technical jargon and explain it better.
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: Timko on July 03, 2012, 10:40:19 AM
Ratings are only affected by how you shoot in relation to the rest of the field on a given day.  Nothing about any previous rounds played on that course affects the ratings, nor par does not factor into it.

Here's my simple breakdown of ratings for people.  If you'd like more information, look up information on a multi-player zero sum game.

Propagators are the people that set the ratings.  They are people with a rating over 799.  Each player over 799 has a bucket of points (determined by their rating).  Those players also have a score they shot on that course.  In what I think is a linear fashion, players give points to those who scored lower than them, and receive points from those who scored higher than them.  These points come out of a person's bucket.  So no points leave the game, but no points are added.  In the end, these points are used to determine round ratings.  So as you can see, ratings are simply based on how you played against the competition that day.
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: Utz on July 03, 2012, 10:48:13 AM
a player must have 8 rated rounds and above 799 rating to be a propagator

.    Interesting, you would say that chris. When you were keeping ratings for leagues, and I shot the 46 at cliff, cd shot a 57, the next best score, I said that has to be 1100 plus rated, you didn't give it to me cause you said you had to base everything of Matty-O's 45 at worlds... sounds contradictory a bit...
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: coops on July 03, 2012, 07:20:46 PM
Not that I would presume to speak for Timko, or know anything, but I would posit that because our league attendances have much lower participation the inclusion of other players scores on the same set up in similar conditions would be helpful in making the ratings more accurate and less dependent on an otherworldly round and a few other players having a poor (or even just slightly below average) round.

Does that sound about right Timko?
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: Ken Franks on July 04, 2012, 01:53:55 PM
Pin placements, wind, rain, snow...all play a factor into ratings. That's why its hard to just have a score a certain rating on pins with multiple placements and played at different times of year. Matty-o shot 45 in 95 degree weather, no wind, I did it in 45 degrees and windy... not sure how that translates, but it does....

Take USDGC for example, That event is only done in early october. There's only a handful of weather situations that can happen and all the pins are always in the same local, Soooo you pretty much know a 68 is gonna be rated between 996-1003, Scratch golf.. It would be a very rare occasion if a 68 would be under 990 or over 1010...

maybe this is a bad example, but not sure how many people really understand the truth about ratings, not even the creator, Chuck Kennedy... It is the best thing we got... I would like to see it done in a different way...

Tank, no matter what it's rated, 46 at cliff is amazing.
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: Timko on July 05, 2012, 09:09:35 AM
While weather and pin placements can affect what an individual shoots, the only thing that affects a round rating is how you shoot against the people you are playing against.

Take the same people (with the same ratings) on the same course with the same weather conditions.  Everyone shoots 10 strokes worse on 1 day than the other.  So even through the scores are significantly different, the ratings will be similar (not the same though, as the number of strokes somehow factor into Chuck's rating system by breaking down to an average number of strokes per hole).

Tank, you are correct; I use previous round ratings to estimate when people ask me about a rating, but the formula itself does not factor any of these things in.

Player rating.  Score.  Those are the ONLY 2 things used in the PDGA's formula.
Title: Re: Mighty MO - June 16th
Post by: jack on July 05, 2012, 09:51:10 AM
This is why ratings are flawed.....well......not why, but another reason.....the ratings information is based solely against the people and that location during that time.  This is why as well when you have an event (like the Wide Open recently) you can have different values of ratings at the same course from the afternoon and morning round.

This is also why when you play against a field that has an average lower rated players (am, Masters, vs. OPEN) your rating can be different by as much as 10-15 points....I have seen a 51 at WW (I believe, example here) during the MPO field of an event be at a 997, then the am field comes over and it was a 982.......nothing really changed except the field that they played in was lower rated, and their better round wasn't rewarded with the same stat's because the field wasn't the same.......

It's what we got to work with, it is not the best, but it is what we use.........

That is why I typically like to use the OPEN ratings baseline locally over another divsion to feel better or worst about the round....  This is also though why like Timko, I tend to generalize what the rating should be at a 1000, are we accurate with 100% certainty on this guestimate?  As you can tell, no we are not.....
