good news.....but Lemon Lake is smaller than Emporia, and DD sponsored player E-Mac won it there huh?  :-)

Had to rib, the comment about smaller community had me chuckling.  I thought of HighBridge (what like 400 people--ashland WI has less than 8k) and Lemon Lake isn't even a town, but Munster and Emporia are pretty close.

At any rate, glad to see it will be here "locally".  Good news, now we need more events to drum up points people!  Glad DD is here in KC pushing through events, play the Mighty Mo this weekend folks!

Count me in for my 2nd Worlds in 4 years!  Especially after the points I'm gonna rack up in Minnesota next weekend!

So I have to have 500 points in 2012? Or just 500 points before Worlds?

I emailed the PDGA yesterday, I'm at work so can't access my personal email, but what I understand is that points acquired in calendar year 2012 is what is counted for the 2013 tournament.  Points from any amateur division count.  While the cutoff may change for 2013, for 2012 (points from 2011) was 500 for Advanced, 200 for Advanced Masters, don't recall other Advanced divisions.  Search PDGA's website for the others.

Yeah, for the rest of 2012, I'm only playing PDGA sanctioned tournaments.  I want an invite.  I may place bottom 5% once I get there, but my intention is getting an invite so I don't have to wait to see if I can apply after the cutoff date.

I know it may be a bit early but I just wanna see who's going to this so we can start getting a group together to split hotel costs. I know I'm going so I figured with the amount of people and limited hotels we may need to reserve the room early. Thinking like a group of 5 to make it as cheap as possible while being somewhat comfortable

Further clarrification:

Invitations to the PDGA World Championships the following year

Invitations to the PDGA World Championships are based on a current member meeting a published minimum number of points for their age-based division during the previous year’s PDGA Tour.  Unlike the End-of-Year awards, all points earned within any division matching the member’s class (Pro or Amateur) count towards a Worlds invitation for their age-based division.  For example, if an Amateur class player earned 250 points playing MM1, 200 points playing MA1, and 100 points playing in MPM, they would receive 450 Amateur class points towards an Amateur Worlds Championship in the MM1 division.  (The Amateur MM1 points plus the Amateur MA1 points; the Pro points earned in MPM don’t count since the member is Amateur class.)

i would bring earplugs regardless of what snoring reports you get from potential roomies.  it is funny how folks develop serious snoring problems once they bunk in your room.  or you can consume a few adult beverages to drown out the log sawing.

Wow. Jay Cram's legacy lives on... As I was thumbing through the AM Worlds white sheet...

Quote
Emporia Municipal Golf Course: (9582 feet) ...
The signature hole is Hole 18 measuring 745 feet which calls for a long tee shot with a risk-reward approach on whether to gun for the green. The putt is made difficult by the prevalent Kansas wind coming off the pond that lines the fairway.
For more information visit YouTube and search "The Wind Putt."

I wish they didn't include Municipal. It just did not feel like golfing. Max Distance drives with OS discs that would land wherever the wind decided to drop it. Maybe if it was shortened a good amount it would be better.

That's funny because I actually had a little to do with that design. I pushed for shorter Par 3s and better, sometimes longer, Par 4s. Unfortunately they took almost every Par 4 idea I had and NONE of my Par 3 ideas. So you got Long and Longer.

Basically. They told me that short Par 3s were too easy for the top 6 guys so they lengthened them. No one cares about  the other 430 people.

Well, I learned something today.  I had renewed my membership to the Professional side, and even though I haven't accepted any cash yet, my invite got yanked to Am Worlds.  I had to call them up and talk to the Tour Director, to get it to where he/they understood that.  I'm back on the invite list, but unknowingly figured they would see that I hadn't accepted any yet.  Wasn't planning on accepting any until after Am Worlds, (insert your joke here...lol... :P), but he said he didn't look at it that way.  If he sees Professional, it's an automatic yank.  FYI, for those that try that approach.  8)

Soooooo....the Am worlds is going to a trophy only this year for the first time in Emporia. ......and hopefully you have seen the article on the home page of the PDGA website- titled "the true amatuer". I realize this doesnt mean anything for the touring pros- but as an amatuer, what does this really mean? I think some more clarity can be brought to this topic. I am getting some negative vibes from some of my other fellow amatuers......  Did this "change"  get implemented strictly from the ideas of Jeremy Rusco and Brian Graham?

What I read is that it's the same model as what is used for GBO.  So basically instead of payouts to top 50% and small player's pack, you get a kick ass player's pack and they payout the top 20%.

- learn how to drive from grass tee pads.
 - learn how to gauge distance in open space.
 - go practice putting in high wind areas.
 - learn how to use short grass skips/flare shots to your advantage.
 - learn how to use a roller.

And don't go OB

Rollers are a much needed advantage on the golf course.  It made the difference for me last year for certain.  I have played on a golf course though probably about 20 times or so, so it helps to have that frame of reference.  Loomis is right on, but the OB's are killer out there, that cost me the win for certain last year.  I couldn't get out of OB's on the COuntry Club or Jones, I did ok on Muni though....
Title: Re: 2013 AM Worlds in Emporia!

OB killed me at Jones.  For 2012, I had my worst rated round at Jones on Friday, and my highest rated round at Muni on Sunday, even with the super duper killer winds.  Luckily that flying cow just missed us.

Keep in mind, I am a solidly Rec rated player.

Trophy only?  Guess you should have played Am Worlds in KC in 1999.   :P

It's not trophy only.

Statement from Jeremy Rusco on this issue:

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83752 (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83752)

Quote
If you are looking to win or place high in your respective division and make a personal gain by receiving additional payout, you still will! We just don’t see the need to pay out 250 of 500 amateur players. This creates mass chaos in most instances while all 250 players are trying to rush and get their payout and get on the road at the same time. We want to give you the best experience up front and for the entire time that you are in Emporia and think that we can do this without paying out half of the field.

Quote
Our payouts are some of the best in the business and we have almost zero sponsorship dollars to put towards the events except for the Innova Champion Discs CFR fundraising program and a few minor sponsors here and there. We hosted a very successful Glass Blown Open in 2012 that featured 432 players with a hybrid of trophy only. We handed players a player pack worth approximately $175, sent them off to play three rounds of golf, and then only paid out a small percentage of the field. Most players seemed to appreciate this model. We are doing the same this year and those that place at the top will be rewarded again. This is basically the same model that we put in front of the PDGA board for our 2013 Amateur World Championships bid proposal. The bid was approved and Dynamic Discs and Emporia, Kansas were awarded the Championships with expectations that the amateur tournament model was in need of some adjustments. The PDGA was supportive and encouraging and felt like if this was the year for change, then having Dynamic Discs behind it would hopefully be the best way to bring this to the players.

Place in the top 10-20% and you'll get your payout.

I'm not sure and would love to see a new statement from Rusco.  No mention was made about any payouts in the 3/20 announcement (http://www.pdga.com/true-amateur) on the pdga site.

Registration should now be open to anyone for divisions with spots open.

Looks like:

Advanced has 5-10 spots depending on their waitlist updates
Advanced Grandmasters has 5 or spots

various other divisions may have 1-3 spots depending on where they are at on their call back lists.

All Things Disc Golf: Speaking of players pack… Can you spill the beans on what everyone is getting?

Jeremy Rusco: I think it will be more exciting to see the reaction of the players first hand so I don’t want to spill the beans just yet. I think it is safe to say with Dynamic Discs & Latitude 64 being the presenting sponsors that the players should expect something, or several exciting things, from Dynamic Discs and Latitude 64. On top of that, we have several other manufacturers who are contributing and sponsoring the event. Discraft and Disc Golf Association (DGA) have been a tremendous help and sponsor for the event. I don’t have confirmation as of yet, but I could see a new release being put in the players pack from Discraft. DGA provided not only a fresh set of 18 new blue Mach V’s for the West course at Jones Park, but also provided trophy baskets for the awards and a disc in the players package. Legacy Discs, Innova, and Prodigy are all player pack and event sponsors so you should expect some items from them as well.

Crap there goes world's....wonder if I can get my money back, horrible that use those things on World's courses, I mean imagine the nerve of the great DD allowing that to happen in their backyard!

Saw them a few weeks ago and they are purty.

They also got some of these:

All Things Disc Golf: The finals will be played with Latitude 64 Pro Baskets, correct? Will they be in play for other rounds?

Jeremy Rusco: Yes! We just received these baskets last week and are excited to introduce the first 18 hole course in the United States with Latitude 64 Pro Baskets. The baskets will be in use all week at the Country Club!

http://www.latitude64.se/products/course-equipment/ (http://www.latitude64.se/products/course-equipment/)

Which I think is hilarious considering the discussion of late.  Even DD can't make up their mind between Mach V or 'yellow banded' baskets.

(however, that band does look smaller in proportion to the target zone, and hopefully won't have the effin' terrible 'clank' sound)

Or maybe they did - they don't care and take whatever is cheap / economical / free.

With their obvious partnerships with Lat 64, makes sense that this would be the first place across the pond to make it happen.  Expensive I am sure as all get out on the shipping costs though.

It really goes to show that the baskets aren't the deciding factor in regards to the course selection, but merely a preference and ability to get the course in as they see it work best for their environment.  In this case I am sure that they worked with the City to ensure that everyone was happy with the selection.

Honestly though getting new baskets on courses is something that helps with the Worlds coming to town, everything gets looked over again and again by not only the disc golf club, but the municipalities that they support.  Lemon Lake just painted theirs this past spring, so they got them all shiny for the visitors.  We got new baskets on a few courses and got courses planted in time for worlds here in 2009 as well.  It takes an entire community to make it work in disc golf, and though we have issues, we are in a good repository in the middle of the US.

Mach Vs are great! They are a wonderful improvement over the Mach IIIs that were there previously since they have three sets of chains and an improved top chain assembly.

Agreed. The Discatchers are the gold standard of technology. Mach III's are inferior in many ways and an over-reliance on them is usually based on an argument for tradition and not in favor of catching ability or the poor and un-uniform kicks that are generated from the upper chain assembly. If anything we should be preferring Mach V's.

Great thanks to DGA.

Played Jones West today with the new Mach V. NOT IMPRESSED.

Now, it could be that the footings were a bit loose, and/or the sleeves were loose, and/or the baskets were leaning a bit, and/or the new chains are tight, but . . .

I layed in two putts, center of chains. In my opinion - perfect putts . . . not too hard to hit the pole and putter bounced out. Not too high, not too low, not left, not right . . .perfect puts. (one was about a 8 foot gimme).

I thought that baskets are supposed to catch good shots, not spit them out.

If the misses were my fault, I would take it. These misses were due to the basket.

I think the outside chain diameter is to close to the diameter of the basket and the chains are too tight.

Haven't really thought too much about baskets, other than the really crappy old home made versions, until this thread. And now, I am paying attention and will evidently change my game for these rejection baskets.

What were the misses like? I've typically had good experience on Mach Vs (though I'm sure most know they are not my preference).

Like you said it might have something to do with the way they are installed or even just being so new. (The sliders on the top edge of the chains can get sticky and make the chains overly taut. If that is the case it might be alleviated with time and play.)

Ratings are not used to determine whether or not you are a "Pro". Only if you Cash or Not.

The only thing I see as "Dumb", is the fact that we have a rating system in our sport that we don't utilize. Oh and the rating system, while I will agree is better than not having one, is dumb. Sorry Chuck.

I think we get that, Dick. Speaking for myself (though Jordan can agree if he wants) I don't understand the point of playing at such a high level and not challenging yourself by, at that point, playing against the best.

Some people like to win... Others, like yourself, like to compete. I think that is the biggest difference.

I like to compete, but I also like cash.  If you're a 1000 rated player and still playing advanced, you either have enough money that it doesn't matter, or you just want to have mounds and mounds of plastic.  I guess we will never all think alike so it is irrelevant.

However, seeing as how I haven't managed to cash in open yet (have only played a handful of open tourneys), I do plan to play in the MAC.  I'm ONLY playing it because I haven't cashed in open yet (therefore making me eligible) and I'm not at 100% yet either after breaking my leg.  Don't worry, I won't be in advanced long...

Joseph Stettinger, currently 1000 rating, has been a 980 player since 2009.  http://www.pdga.com/player_stats/41830 (http://www.pdga.com/player_stats/41830)

I understand having quickly rising players with high ratings playing, but a 980 since 2009??? He is not an Am player.

Compare that to Eric who was 940 this time last year.  Matt Perry was 909 this time last year.

So looking at some of the photos from this event, is one/two of the courses played on a ball golf course that they converted to a DGC?  If so, is that for this event only?

Nailer,

The Municipal Golf Course in Emporia uses 9 ball golf holes for us to play some truly beautiful golf on. (par 65 for worlds) Emporia Country Club gets absolutely taken over with disc golfers, as they let us use the entire course for some very tough golf. A few holes were made short for worlds, but it's still a blistering, and incredibly difficult par 61.

These courses are only available during tournament time and can usually be played (with golf carts!) up to 2 days before a tournament. After that they go back to Ball Golf. It was a wonderful experience as the entire town of Emporia embraced Disc Golfers for this long week.

NICE!  I thought I saw some photos and it looked like a ball golf course, manicured, fairways, etc.  That is really cool Utz.  Thanks for the info.  I did not know that.

Big ups to Matt Perry and Eric Eastwood, taking 17th and 18th respectively in Advanced Men.

Additional props for ex-local Adam Morrison, taking 12th in Advanced Men.

To all KC players, you all played great, even Jack! ;)

Could have played better but man did dynamic discs blow every tournament I've played out of the water with this one. Every round was smooth with no complaints due to the hard work of the dd team and the course directors. Special props to Scott reek holding down muni on the only course with tee times. That course was on schedule all week. Anyone who has the chance to play a World championship do it. It is unlike anything else.

Saw peter put a drive on the green on a 650ft hole SWEET!

The tourney was a blast, the bonds and relationships that DD must have with the community is amazing. It took Rusco like 35 min to thank everyone in town who sponsored the tournament. And to get to use ball golf courses for how many days was flipping awesome for a community to allow. All of the business new about us and frequently asked how we were doing. Well said Perry and nice shooting final round

Karma got me!
Played the first round in birkenstock type sandals and 4 discs found in the hotel room-
Champion Destroyer (I've thrown Destroyers, never a Champion, only Star)
Prodigy D2 (BTW I don't have one of these in my bag)
Mako 3 From players pack
DGA Breaker-putter/approach from players pack

4 discs, never thrown any of them before in my life in sandals....but I made it to my tee on time, and finished the round, and was able to play.  When asked what I did, I didn't drive, so I left my keys in another vehicle that was at the course before I was so I had all my items in the car not in the hotel room.  It is ok, I played poorly that round, but again I am not the best disc golfer out there, one of the loudest, sure, one that has a lot of fun, absolutely, everyone on my card couldn't believe how well I took the situation though.....  I just knew at some point the only person to blame is myself, and that is really something that many can't do.

I had a very good time, and almost made the cut.

As for 1000 rated players playing in the Am Worlds....it is their right.  We don't know what their logic is, and only they can make that decision.  I have reasons for requesting to be dropped back to AM status.  Some people never plan on playing for money, I think that is ok.  Some people want to win a World title, I think that is ok.

People questioning others intent in a chat room, or a bar.....typical just gossip and though it may not happen at work any longer the chat rooms make it easier to poke and prod as to your own opine as to why someone is doing something that you wouldn't do.  Just ask them, chances are they will tell you the reason.

Mine are quite simple-I want to choose where I play, and not be dictated by the PDGA on which events I can and can't play.  As an AM, I make that decision.  This was my first Am Masters Worlds, and I won't play it again until 2015 in K-Zoo.  I will though play in the Japan Open as a Pro-Master because as an AM I can, as a Pro I couldn't play in K-Zoo.

Ratings aside, playing in sandals and then almost making the cut....man that would have been a good story.  The only one that could have been better was if I shot a 59 in sandals! 8)
