ok i luv cliff drive, but have any trees been planted as a result of this tournament? can we please change the name to the glock classic?

Dude, it only raised like $200 last year. That's maybe 2 decent trees. Just be patient and wait foe the new hooes to go in, then the trees will come. And I'd play in a Glock Classic if you were to get it going.

i made the announcement last year at the players' meeting that jack would oversee this project in my absence(if you were there, danger, you would have already known).  after countless discussions with jack about numerous projects at cliff drive, it was decided to save up the money and do a larger planting when i return.  I have the watering tank and i didn't see the point of putting in trees without a regular supply of water.  seems to be a wise decision given the amount of rain kc is getting this year.  we should be able to get a better deal on the trees and mulch in two years with the money from the first three tournaments.  we raised almost $300 last year and the KCFDC has been kind enough to oversee that money until I return.

the new holes and the trees are separate, independent projects.  we will not be planting any trees on the holes we may be loosing until we have confirmation on their ultimate status.  there are plenty of existing holes in need of numerous trees that have no plans for leaving us (18,17,16,10,11).  we will be starting with those holes, probably in that order.

thanks for the inquiries, danger and khyzer.  :D

We will be needing 2 big trees to replace the front tree on #8, all the car fires there over the years have taken its toll on them.  I would anticipate it going down within the next 18 months.....sad, but planting 2 trees there will still make it a tough shot on the short placement.

What time is the players meeting and tee off?  I looked on the PDGA signup page, and quite possibly overlooked the time, but nonetheless I have no idea when this tourney gets started.

FYI, as we did last year, this year the course will play longer the first round than the second.  Last year, I moved 9 pins between rounds.  Look for a similar number this year.  I still need to confirm with Jack and Ryan as to which greens will be playable.  (It sucks trying to host a tournament from 600+ miles away.)  Hopefully will get this finalized this week.  Last years pins were:

1st round:  1w,2w,3w,4r,5r,6w,7w,8b,9w,10w,11b,12w,13b,14b,15r,16w,17temp,18r
2nd round:  1w,2r,3w,4w,5w,6w,7w,8w,9w,10w,11r,12w,13b,14w,15w,16r,17temp,18b

We can make it all work Drew, you let us know which Pin's you want used in the morning, and then we will work on the movement between rounds.

Most of the greens are in pretty good shape this year due to NO RAIN, so the course plays really like it would in the late fall, which is nice for those of us putting in weedwhacking hours.  Probably need to clean up a little on 4&5, but not a lot.

I need to get #2 un-frozen as well, and may try to get that taken care of this week.

You and your "one finger" just need to move up.  ;)  Last yr was a shirt and a disc.  don't quite have the players pack nailed down for this year yet.  hopefully, i'll have that info out by next week.  Its a lower entry fee than most pdga events for a reason, its more of an awareness raiser than a fundraiser.  this tourney is not for the ams who want to take home a stash of plastic to sell on ebay.  you want to make money move up.  you want to play for a W, pride, bragging rights, Emporia Worlds points, PDGA ratings, and a trophy for a good cause, play whatever division you are eligible for.  i was well over the pdga minimums last year for fundraisers on both the am and the pro side.  the players pack value will be about the value of the entry minus trophy costs.  pdga does not waive their fee without a 501c3.  kcfdc was kind enough to waive their fee since it goes back to the course.  the number of trophies will be based on the number of players in each division to preregister.  i do trophy buzzes so that those who earn them, can do as they please, hang them or throw them or whatever.  trying to be as player friendly as i can with a clear conscience.

its not a specific number for each player.  that will depend on the players pack margins this year and the number of ams vs pros.  Last yr. we raised ~$300 with 17 players.  the low turnout was mostly my fault and i am trying to improve on several things this year.

We also used the Lion's Den Open this year as a "course fund improvement" for Cliff Drive, and we will be donating that towards the TLC amount on the year!

Round 1:
1w,2w,3w,4r,5r,6w,7b,8b,9w,10w,11b,12w,13b,14b,15w,16r,17w,18r

Raising money for local courses and you had to make it a pdga event.   I would play but I don't want to donate to the pdga.  I realize am worlds is in Emporia next year, but every event this year seems to be pdga sanctioned and I have to pay an extra 10 dollars to play. Why don't you just have a course donation ace fund at every tournament in kc and make it a 50/50.

while i also have my issues with some things the pdga does, in general, i support the structure they are giving the sport.  i can't speak for other TD's in the area as to why they choose to sanction or not sanction (though i suspect most TD's have a strong stance either way).  i personally like having the documented rules in place to lean on instead of using arbitrary rules that i must enforce on the players who are also my friends (i had to stroke jlowe last year  :-\).  i grew up an athlete and this sport fills that void for me.  plus pdga events have the potential to draw more people from out of town.

just like last year, the ace fund will be 100% if it gets hit.  if no ace is hit, we will do a short ctp for 50/50 with 1/2 going to the tree fund.

can't say for sure but i believe these events were unsanctioned in kc this year:
  andy and deano's bday
twisted at old pike and ww
  DUI
  eastern front
  SSR
  ddkc traveling one days
  LDO
  RAC
  club championships
  hitting chains for BACA
  Mo PR BlueBird Series
  Afternoon d-lite
  Ace race

I'll pay your $10 PDGA fee Sean!  Come on out!  I have paid for a few PDGA fees already this year!

The LDO and GRIP eq are going to be able to donate $223 towards the Tree Fund for Cliff this year, we are already off to a GREAT start for the event!  Now if I can just decipher  :o these pin placements.....someone is obviously not color blind!

The PDGA has an event that aligns with a charitable contribution, so this isn't all the PDGA money going in.  With all the PDGA events, and the sanctioning it does legitimize the event within the P&R as well as the local community.  We haven't held as many events (sanctioned) where we can say we drew in people from these part of the states, and other states as a PDGA event.

Historically you will be having more people attend PDGA events from other locations and have a higher turnout than those events that are not sanctioned.

17-Short-495 (3)
18-Practice Basket Blue location-663 (4)
----In 3969 (30)----
Total 6750 (58)

That is how it is slated to be played.  For those of you wondering about the (par), in those holes the decision is made that if you were to miss the hole, you should get a par +4, and typically getting a 3 is playing it very well, playing very well is playing above average, or above par.......so with that in mind here are your par's for the day.  I will work on getting the course set up this week in this configuration for people to practice on.  Though I will probably not move #2 back to short until the week of the event since it just moved long for the first time since this event last year......

Looking forward to having people out at Cliff Drive for this fantastic event.  Looking forward to having Drew back in town as well.  This is a great event for a great cause!  Please come support it!

Thanks,

Jack

This just in, amateur players who don't pre-register for the event by Monday, September 10th, may have to pick up their player's pack the following week at Dynamic Discs – Kansas City: 2854 West 47th St., Kansas City, KS  66103, instead of at the tournaments.  This is to keep all of the profits going towards the trees instead of tying possible revenue up in un-needed plastic and shirts.  only exception is players from out of the metro area.

I'm planning on driving up for Joplin for this event but I won't know 100% for sure until late next week.  Would you still rather me pre-register a day or two before the event or just show up the day of?

Ams pay $35, get a disc and a shirt, and the rest of the entry fee goes to the fundraiser, correct?  What kind of disc?  Cotton or dri-fit shirt?  How is the $45 entry fee for Pro's being paid out?

I've only played Cliff once about 3 years ago and I'm excited to come play it again.

hope you can make it.  i don't expect it to fill before saturday morning but you never know.  i would recommend contacting me before you make the drive to make sure you have a spot.

discs will be all discraft, mostly z, possibly some esp or flx.  shirts are long-sleeve cotton.

some of the rest of the am entry fee will pay for trophies, the rest will go to the fundraiser.  the pro purse will be paid out in cash according to the pdga payout tables within each division.

INjury report update-

Jack Lowe-who injured his calf on SAturday during the trouncing of the WEak Side by the EAST SIDE, is said to be moving better today.  Though some slight tenderness is still obvious, this injury is still too far out to make a determination on his game time status.  Those of you interested in deep sleeper picks in the TLC fantasy Draft for the Age-protected-division-protected-gender-protected division's should continue to monitor the information leaked out by their camp.

We will keep you updated as the situation continues to confound those of wanting to know.

Is DGCR still pretty accurate for Cliff Drive in terms of holes and layout?

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=286&mode=hi (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=286&mode=hi)

I've played Cliff once and it was probably 3+ years ago so I just want to know if it's even remotely the same course from back then.

it hasn't changed too much in the last 3 yrs other than a significant loss of trees  :'(  .  the layout on dgcr is a typical layout for cliff but some holes will have multiple pins and can play quite a bit shorter or longer.  i will be moving 12 pins at lunch break so you will get two different rounds of golf.

holes 2,4,7,8,18 can/will play longer than dgcr values one round or the other
holes 1,4,14,15,16,17 can/will play shorter than dgcr values one round or the other

1w,2w,3w,4r,5r,6w,7b,8b,9w,10w,11b,12w,13b,14b,15w,16r,17w,18r
Round2:
1r,2r,3w,4b,5w,6w,7w,8w,9w,10w,11r,12w,13b,14r,15r,16w,17r,18b

if you're keeping tabs, thats 12 holes moving at lunch.

Ok So for me who doesn't get your color schematics.....I got the code breaking sheet from Drew!  ;D
Round 1:
1-Original-432 (4)
2-Long-330 (3)
3-Short-234 (3)  :P
4-Short-225 (3)
5-Short-186 (3)

7-Long/Deep-366 (3)
8-Long-549 (4)
9-Short-309 (3)  :P
----Out-3019 (29)----
10-Middle-324 (3)
11-Long-492 (3)
12-Short-375 (3)   ::)
13-Long-711 (4)
14-Long Right across Road-431 (3)
15-Long/Left-396
16-Short-360 (3)
17-Peninsula-683 (4)

Total-7285 (59)

Round 2
1-Short-330 (3)
2-Short-210 (3)
3-Long-234 (3)  ;D
4-Long-375 (4)
5-Long-252 (3)
6-Long/Right-387 (3)
7-Middle-300 (3)
8-Tree's-384 (3)
9-Long-309 (3)  ???
----Out 2781 (28)----
10-Middle-324 (3)
11-Short-279 (3)
12-Long-375 (3)  :P
13-Long-711 (4)
14-Short-274 (3)
15-Short-320 (3)
16-Original/Long-528 (4)
17-Short-495 (3)

Thanks,

Jack

Yeah the reviews are pretty well right in line with where things are.  Now hopefully we will be singing a song and dance on the new holes for next year's event.

The talk of trash in the park by a few of the reviewers is tough to take, but its something that we all need to work on.  Unfortunately the P&R brought in 8 new cans for us to use that were stolen within the first 3 days of being placed there.....unbelievable.  I need to get plastic ones out there, and paint them P&R green for the future.

when you come from places like Minnesota, you get surprised about the trash on all the courses, they also complained about Rosedale, and Water Works on the trash.....it makes sense, I was thinking it about WW on Saturday last week.  There is only one of me though, and others that help.  I know that we have made many strides to help clean up Cliff, but we have many more strides to go.

As we move into the next phase of Cliff Drive though we will be making a bigger impact, and P&R with their CPTED ideas as well as the new trails connecting the River Market, etc, homeless camps will become less of an eye sore and diminished in the area, then it will be the illegal dumping that we tackle.  Collectively we have made an impact, and a guest to our city that isn't here daily wouldn't know that.

INJURY UPDATE-
Jack Lowe-Designer of the Cliff Drive Disc Golf course has indicated that the swelling is subsiding quite nicely at this point in his right calf.  Though not ruled in or out yet for the Annual Tree Love Classic, signs and indication at this point are leaning towards a favorable stance in the chances he will make at least the first round appearance.  This though couldn't be confirmed at the time of the reporting.  So as of now, listing him as day-to-day would be a subjective call, and he should remain inactive on all rosters until the confirmation comes from the camp on his medical condition.

Yes it is.  MEN MASTERS, I can't play Women's Masters and women can't play Men's masters (though sometimes they are allowed due to divisional restraints.  If I tried to play Women's Masters what would happen?

Drew is correct.  Jack, nope.  There are no Men only divisions. Look at Tour Standards PDF  CLASS and Division name; no division is described as * Men, where as WOMEN's divisions are explicitly named * Women.  Don't try to infer anything from the division code.  Women are never restricted from playing in say MPM, as long as they meet the age requirement.

One way street. Isn't that how equality is supposed to work?  ;)

Injury update--Jack Lowe MM1 division player-
Reports are coming in that Jack Lowe is walking with less noticeable limp today.  The moves that he has shown over the last week in terms of walking seem to be improving on a daily basis.  We finally tracked him down with some tough questions, here are his responses:

Q-Jack, how does the calf feel, it appears as though that you aren't favoring it as much as you were earlier in the week.

A-Yeah, it feels better.  You know, I think that the Loomis dude put some sort of 48 state hex on me, and I am beginning to think that the spell was only to work during the weekend, but he put such a strong mojo on it, that it carried over into the next week.  I mean, you saw my game out there last Saturday morning, Perry and I were killing it, we were hitting shots, I was on, and no Loomis to be found.  Then the afternoon round, when I started to put together some shots, he went behind the bushes in Rosedale, and we all know what happens when you go there, and then I put a shot about 3' from #10, and the next time I went to drive, WHAM.  I wish the camera's from "the ocho" were on us, because I bet replay would show that he threw something at my calf.

Q-Are you going to be ready to play this Saturday, and will you play better than last year, where you really didn't have a great day, but still was able to win the field?

A-You know, it is tough to defend a title, and I had quite a few distractions, especially the rain, the long lunch at Hickock's, the constant badgering from G$ and the name calling.  I mean, I get it, he is scared of my game, and feels threatened every time he sees that I have signed up, but at some point you need to realize that superior gamesmanship is going to happen.  I am not sure why this too tall dude thinks that he can drive up and compete, I mean look at it, he shot a sub 800, heck, a sub 775 round last year at the event, and he wants to talk trash?  I am prepared to win if I do in fact play.  I'd say right now the desire to defend is strong, but the calf that Loomis locked up is not cooperating.

Q-You seem to be game day decision, when do you think you will decide on when you will play?

A-Well, I really think that it may come up to the last minute.  Each day I seem to be getting better and better, walking up the stairs is still quite a chore, and the terrain on the front 11 holes is going to stress that out.  THe following week with Topeka, then possibly Joplin make the decision tough.  Do I want to rest a week so that I am able to go strong, or is playing for one day going to be able to help move those muscles?  The fact the event is a 1-day ordeal really helps, in that I know that I can probably muster through it, but will it hurt the rest of the month's planned events?  The other thing that is HUGE to know is that Tom Palmer and Tom Mollenkamp, and Dirk Hacker are at this point being little children and haven't indicated that they will be attempting to play.  I like how they get scared that easily, and it makes the desire to play strong.  At this point, I am probably 55/45, which isn't good.  Rest assured though, if I am not playing, I will be there to heckle.

Q-How many trees are you hoping to love, and will you love them classically?

A-That's it, I am out of here, your questions are ridiculous.

Well, with that he stormed out, and gave no indication as to when he may be made available for comments.  We shall keep this and the other injuries updated (Chris Timko-hangnail (we were told that he also has a broken nostril hair, that is impeding his breathing), Tracy Walker-Pride in his game) as they become available.

----Breaking news-----This bulletin was just sent into the office-----

In a incredible twist of information, the player known as Jack Lowe has been reclassified as an amateur player.  Last year after turning pro in Olathe by accepting cash, he won his next event as an amateur, this year after playing abysmally in Olathe he requested and received notification that he is in fact now back to "amateur status" within the governing body and will be eligible for all the shenanigans that come along with the title of sandbagging as a player.  Though based on many of his rounds this year, the term sandbagging for him has about as much need as the sand bags themselves were needed in most of the United States.  In other words, they weren't, kinda like his game, it wasn't....

No comment from the camp on the determination of the event still, but there will continue to be those that monitor it accordingly.

Here is the release that came from the camp.

Jack,

Sorry for the delay, I was on the road for three weeks then went immediately into a ratings update prep period and now the PDGA Board Fall Summit.

Looking at the criteria:

You have not previously reclassified from Pro to Am
You are Masters age and under a 935 rating
You last accepted $ on 9/3/2011 over a year ago

You are approved for reclassification to Amateur status as 0f 9/13/2012.

Announce away!

Yeah.  I was telling someone I 4'd my last 3 holes and had a hole that I 3 putted within 12 feet as well, so that round could have been really, really good.  I did 3 #8 and #14 (5 2's and 5 4's with nothing worse on the scorecard).  But it's nice to play a round that doesn't feel like I'm playing out of my mind and it turn out that well.

The better part was following it up with the 882 :(.  Going 5-6-6 on 3, 4, and 5 will do that to you.

How do I find my round ratings?

Hyzer: PDGA Score Postings (http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/91125) ---> then click 'Show Round Ratings'

The real story of the day was Teddy Keith's 958 rated round 2. Go Teddy! stellar play!

Okay, it shows 972 and 929 for me. With this being my only PDGA event, would my player rating just be an average of the two? 950.5?

I believe that you have to use 6 rounds to create a true rating for numbers standpoint Mike.  Chris, I am all too familiar with the great one round what happened the 2nd round play!

Thanks Greg! It was a great round for me on that course. I don't often break 60 at Cliffy. Still not enough to catch the great G$ after my 918 first round.
