Squids?
« on: February 25, 2014, 09:56:03 AM »
http://discgolfaddiction.com/sell-my-disc-go-to-jail/

I know there are some opinions on this out there. It has come up before. But in a situation where many, many discs are left in a pond due to an inability to go in and get it immediately and entering the pond being illegal to begin with why should "squids" get away with taking discs lost in this way? Especially if there is a plan in place to periodically clean out the pond legally with the intention of lawfully returning the lost discs. Involving the law, right or wrong? Discuss....

Most ponds say no swimming or fishing...squids are harvesting and providing a public service cuz the signs dont stop me; its the pond scum. However it is your property and I think you have a right to get it back if you see it...got to boycott the sellers
putt, putt, give.

Hey Mike - we haven't had a discussion lately.  Hope things are going well.

Keep in mind this article is about a specific course in FL.

Looks like a commentor from that article found the law you were looking for.

http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2011/705.102

Quote
705.102 Reporting lost or abandoned property.—(1) Whenever any person finds any lost or abandoned property, such person shall report the description and location of the property to a law enforcement officer.
(2) The law enforcement officer taking the report shall ascertain whether the person reporting the property wishes to make a claim to it if the rightful owner cannot be identified or located. If the person does wish to make such claim, he or she shall deposit with the law enforcement agency a reasonable sum sufficient to cover the agency’s cost for transportation, storage, and publication of notice. This sum shall be reimbursed to the finder by the rightful owner should he or she identify and reclaim the property.
(3) It is unlawful for any person who finds any lost or abandoned property to appropriate the same to his or her own use or to refuse to deliver the same when required.
(4) Any person who unlawfully appropriates such lost or abandoned property to his or her own use or refuses to deliver such property when required commits theft as defined in s. 812.014, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

Mike Hyzer was wrong. Stealing discs that people were too lazy or too unresourceful to recover is a sh1tty thing to do, and Rob M has shown me the law.

Don't throw your disc somewhere where you cannot retrieve it. If you do, its on you.. IMO.. I left a pop can at ww, it has my fingerprints on it that are exclusive to me alone. I want whoever took it to go to jail! This is f@cking ridiculous

Geez guys. This is about as enforceable as doing 72 in a 65 at 5:10 pm. Do what you think is the right thing to do. For me, I call the owner two times. If they don't come and get it, it's mine.

That's why it's ridiculous that the state would have a say in the matter at all. Seriously, anyone who calls the cops over a golf disc is a bigger d-bag than those who don't try to turn in the lost discs they find.

Well said, Hyzer.

Frankly, if I leave a disc behind for whatever reason, whether or not I'm allowed/not-allowed to retrieve it...I don't expect to ever see it again.  C'est la vie.

Can only think of one disc in my bag that I might shed a tear = a '98 Roc that I have absolutely no replacement for...none in my bag or archives are even close to being as understable.

BINGO!  We have a winner!

Honestly - I don't care much about the 'do I call or don't I' and 'you left it, you abandoned it' threads.  It's like politics.  Endless arguing and no position changes every made.

I just had a need to find the law beause Hyzer was asking for it.

Mike - you owe me another Busch Light.

And there is this    http://www.cultofmac.com/233185/the-tile-finally-gets-device-tagging-and-tracking-right/

I really don't get the waste of time and energy and gas trying to get a 10-20 dollar disc back.
Unless you know the person and hold it for them for a later date.
The mere mention of getting law enforcement involved makes me cringe. Waste of taxpayers money for your errant throw.

No doubt that the tile in the link will be built into discs in the future. Look at what glow lights have become.

It is OK to like your disc and take them out on dates, maybe even develop a bonding relationship.
Just don't marry them, they will always leave you. Unless you hang them on your wall.
Even that is no guarantee.

Bring on some Spring, Jonesing pretty bad here.
