Hi All -

I've arranged with the Lenexa Parks & Rec Dept to lead disc golf demonstrations at four different times on Saturday Sept 6, during the Spinach Festival. (This is an annual one-day festival so named because Lenexa was apparently the “Spinach Capital of the World” during the 1930s - alrighty then!) The festival is at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (seriously, that's the name of the park), located at 87th and Lackman.

The LPRD opened a very short 9-hole course at SKPTP in June ("Lenexa DGC" - average hole length 177 ft).  Because the course is so short, it draws a lot of newcomers and families with kids.  I play there often with my son (age 6), and we have been approached so often by new players and non-players wanting to know more about the game, that I asked the LPRD for an opportunity to do some organized demonstrations. They responded immediately and enthusiastically, and we agreed that the Spinach Festival would be a great time to do it, because it brings in about 5,000-6,000 people for the day! (The course is on the opposite end of the park from the festival grounds, so it will be available for play that day.)

The crowd will be family-heavy, so my plan is to give a 15 minute "disc golf 101" clinic - mix of explanation, demonstration, FAQs, trivia, audience participation, etc. - just enough to get folks familiar with the basic concepts and show them how to get started. Some safety and courtesy tips, and basic rules, but no teaching of technique (a few shot types demonstrated, to give folks an idea what's possible, but not taught).

Here's where you come in -

I'd like to have 5-7 experienced disc golfers present to help with the "demonstration" parts - then, after the presentation, escort small groups through 6 holes, so our new converts can play along with the benefit of someone who can "show them the chains" - explain order of play, offer beginner tips, answer questions... and... maybe show off a little. ;)

If you like introducing newcomers to the sport, especially kids/families, this is a great opportunity, and I'd love to have your help! Calling all Disc Divas, Juniors, Legends, Pros, Ams, everyone!  My goal is to present disc golf as something anyone can play and enjoy. (Bring your whole family - the festival has something for everyone, including a great kids play area.)

I'll be presenting at 10:00, 11:30, 1:00, and 2:30 that day.

I've set up a volunteer schedule on Google Docs. If you can come out to help that day, please click the link below, and add your name to the schedule in any time slot(s) that suit you:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a-nNhV-7ZKEIKsa8beXtGeb94_1i8bRdeZmWql48p2M/edit?usp=sharing

There are two tabs on the spreadsheet, one for time slots, the other for your contact info, so I can give you additional details about where to park, and arrange to get a volunteer admission pass for you (otherwise you'll have to pay $1 to get in).

I'm not looking for an iron-clad commitment.  It is NOT A BIG DEAL if you sign up, and then something happens that you can't make it.  Nor is it important for you to stick to the exact time slots I've listed.  I'm prepared to do the whole thing solo, so really you can show up at any time, and leave when you like.  I'm just trying to get a handle on how many helpers MIGHT be there at any given time.

I expect sizeable audiences, but if nobody shows, that's okay - we'll just have ourselves a little birdie bash!

I might be able to attend. If I can swing it I will be bringing my 6 year old. He's been playing with me since he was 3 and loves meeting/teaching kids how to play.

That would be perfect. Doesn't matter how many times I tell people it's a great game for kids, nothing gets the message across like watching a 6-yr-old take the tee and launch a drive 120 ft down the fairway. :) Even if you can't make it, let's still get together for a father/son round since our boys are the same age and my son is also totally into the game.

The course at Sar-Ko is featured on the cover of the Fall issue of Lenexa Leisure, the LPRD's publication - great picture, great publicity:

We are totally up for that!!!

Hey I can help show how not to throw.   ;)

Don't forget the girls.  Got a 7 year old girl and 8 year old boy who like playing.

Will definitely try to make it.  In the area anyway.

The girls are most definitely not forgotten... the more girl/women players we can get to assist with this event, the better!

[My "father/son round" suggestion to Andy was really just a sidebar, but is a concept I want to expand on.  I've talked with numerous other players (both genders) with interested kids (both genders) who have agreed it would be great to organize some kind of parent/kid "league" or "night" (not necessarily competitive)... I think I'll make that my next project after the Spinach Festival.  If anyone else has already started something like that, please let me know...]

Mike Petrin sent me a message saying he'd bring up the Spinach Festival demos at the board meeting this Wednesday. I'll look forward to hearing how that goes... stay tuned...

Just joined this group yesterday (this is my first post) but I believe that you and I met last weekend out at hole 6 when you let my son and I play through.  We talked briefly about the Ottawa course.

We're going to try to make it over to one of the demos!

*** 10 days until the Spinach Festival ***

I've set up a volunteer schedule on Google Docs.  Anyone with the link below can open and edit the schedule.  If you can come out to help that day, please add your name to the schedule in any time slot(s) that suit you:

Remember, it is NOT A BIG DEAL if you sign up, and then something happens that you can't make it.  Nor is it important for you to stick to the exact time slots I've listed.  It's FINE if you arrive late, or leave early. I'm just trying to get a handle on how many helpers MIGHT be there at any given time.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks Chris for signing up to help!  I'll send you some additional info over the weekend and will arrange to get an admission pass for you.

Good luck in Old Settler's tomorrow... not sure which course you're playing in the morning but I volunteered to be a spotter at Prairie Center so you might see me out there.

I wasn't able to attend the afternoon round of Old Settler's, but I understand someone made an announcement about the Spinach Festival during the awards ceremony. Whoever did that - thanks!!!
