Hi All -I've arranged with the Lenexa Parks & Rec Dept to lead disc golf demonstrations at four different times on Saturday Sept 6, during the Spinach Festival.
(This is an annual one-day festival so named because Lenexa was apparently the “Spinach Capital of the World” during the 1930s - alrighty then!) The festival is at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park
(seriously, that's the name of the park), located at 87th and Lackman.
The LPRD opened a very short 9-hole course at SKPTP in June ("Lenexa DGC" - average hole length 177 ft). Because the course is so short, it draws a lot of newcomers and families with kids. I play there often with my son (age 6), and we have been approached so often by new players and non-players wanting to know more about the game, that I asked the LPRD for an opportunity to do some organized demonstrations. They responded immediately and enthusiastically, and we agreed that the Spinach Festival would be a great time to do it, because it brings in about 5,000-6,000 people
for the day! (The course is on the opposite end of the park from the festival grounds, so it will be available for play that day.)
The crowd will be family-heavy, so my plan is to give a 15 minute "disc golf 101" clinic - mix of explanation, demonstration, FAQs, trivia, audience participation, etc. - just enough to get folks familiar with the basic concepts and show them how to get started. Some safety and courtesy tips, and basic rules, but no teaching of technique (a few shot types demonstrated, to give folks an idea what's possible, but not taught). Here's where you come in -
I'd like to have 5-7 experienced disc golfers present to help with the "demonstration" parts - then, after the presentation, escort small groups through 6 holes, so our new converts can play along with the benefit of someone who can "show them the chains" - explain order of play, offer beginner tips, answer questions... and... maybe show off a little.
If you like introducing newcomers to the sport, especially kids/families, this is a great opportunity, and I'd love to have your help! Calling all Disc Divas, Juniors, Legends, Pros, Ams, everyone! My goal is to present disc golf as something anyone
can play and enjoy. (Bring your whole family - the festival has something for everyone, including a great kids play area.) I'll be presenting at 10:00, 11:30, 1:00, and 2:30 that day.
I've set up a volunteer schedule on Google Docs. If you can come out to help that day, please click the link below, and add your name to the schedule in any time slot(s) that suit you:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a-nNhV-7ZKEIKsa8beXtGeb94_1i8bRdeZmWql48p2M/edit?usp=sharing
There are two tabs on the spreadsheet, one for time slots, the other for your contact info, so I can give you additional details about where to park, and arrange to get a volunteer admission pass for you (otherwise you'll have to pay $1 to get in).
I'm not looking for an iron-clad commitment. It is NOT A BIG DEAL if you sign up, and then something happens that you can't make it. Nor is it important for you to stick to the exact time slots I've listed. I'm prepared to do the whole thing solo, so really you can show up at any time, and leave when you like. I'm just trying to get a handle on how many helpers MIGHT be there at any given time.
I expect sizeable audiences, but if nobody shows, that's okay - we'll just have ourselves a little birdie bash!Lenexa Spinach Festival:http://www.lenexa.com/spinachFall 2014 issue of Lenexa Leisure (disc golf cover story!)http://www.lenexa.com/Assets/departments/parks/pdfs/lenexa_leisure.pdfMy 14-year-old brother-in-law practicing on Hole 2 at Lenexa DGC, bagging his first ace ever:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtfUFpnSJrg&list=UU3aMl9g3VamWpGyYFlf9YbQ
