I am moving to KC MO in July
« on: April 19, 2007, 09:09:01 AM »
Good day, I am moving from The Washington DC area to KC MO in July.  I am pretty certain on the apartment I want (Bennington Ridge in zip code 64117) and was wondering if you guys could give me a few tips on the area, what courses are close by.  I've done a lot of reading (playdg.com rocks) on the courses in Kc and I'm very excited about the Dg community there.

Many thanks,
Jeffrey

Welcome!  I believe your zip code is close to Worlds of Fun (amusement park), so you'll be nearest to Water Works (Thurs league), Blue Valley (Sun league), and Cliff Drive (Mon league) Disc Golf Courses.
You'll like our fine folks and courses here!  8)

Welcome to the neighborhood, Jeffrey.

I think it is safe to say that you will be spoiled for disc golf enjoyment here.  Looking at a map of our courses, it appears that you are closest to Water Works.  Consider yourself lucky.

Thanks guys, I understand the area is a little old, but it's not ghetto is it?  My wife and I were reading up on the crime stats for the area, and we were a little surprised that it's even higher than areas around us.

Cheers,
Jeffrey

Just make sure that you dont play Cliff or Blue Valley by yourself. I would reccomend a group of three at the least. You are not likely to run into trouble, but it is out there. Then again, there are good and bad people everywhere, nomatter where you go (in life, the world, etc...), so one should always use wisdom regardless of statistics and what not.

The areas not really that bad.  I live in the same area (I live at Brighton and Parvin, same ZIP code), and I've never had any crime issues.  Welcome to the neighborhood!

Welcome to KC, man! I'm a Detroit transplant myself. When it comes to the "ghettoness" of Cliff Drive and Blue Valley, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've played both courses alone without incident many times, although I probably wouldn't do so at night. The local riffraff you'll see there are usually prostitutes turning tricks or the old creepy gay guys that meet up there for buggery. Either way, they pretty much leave us disc golfers alone.
As the others said, though, you'll probably end up liking Water Works best out of the 3 courses you'll be close to.
Again, welcome to KC. Hope to see you out sometime!

I have only lived here for two and a half years, and I am still surprised by the extent to which the safety of a neighborhood will change in a very short distance in Kansas City.  I think this city is unique in how difficult it is to predict how comfortable you will be at a given address without actually going there.  My recommendation to you would be to make sure you personally visit whatever place you are moving to.  It is realistic to say that the address you are looking at could vary wildly from one street over in any direction.  If you do make a trip out, maybe you could plan it such that one of us locals could guide you through a park or two.

Good luck with the move.

Thanks guys, I've been looking forward to this move for a while now, was supposed to do it last year but I couldn't secure an apartment.  I must say I'm psyched about Waterworks being the closest and we didn't plan it that way, we knew we'd be moving close to worlds of fun tho.

The Disc Golf out here in Northern Va (just outside DC) is pretty good, but not great.  Most of the courses are short (Think less than 225 average length) but there's a couple of pro level courses within reasonable driving distance, but when you drive in Northern Va, it takes you 4-5 times longer than you think to get there, that's one of the main reason we're leaving this area, besides every house costing $500,000 and up.

I might even make it out in time for the Sunburn open, but if I don't, there's a last PDGA (I'm # 31525) event I'll be playing before I go.

I'm a pretty new golfer, been doing it since last July but I totally love it and look forward to playing on more challenging courses and I'm sorry I can't get out there in time for the Wide-Open, but I'll be throwing in it next year!

I've always enjoyed playing disc golf in that area. I've only played a few courses but I liked Bluemont Park in Arlington, although it is really congested with 27 tee pads on 9 holes, it had the best layout and was the nicest park of the courses I played out that way. Sherrando Park in Stevens City is nice but not as well maintaind as anything out this way. The new course in Harrisonburg, VA was a pretty good design with really tight tree-lined fairways but then they leave you a quarter mile from the parking lot at #1 when you hole out on #18. The courses in Richmond were fun, but again, not maintained well enough for as much traffic as they get.

You will be spoiled when you get to KC for sure. Good luck with the move!
