The name WYCO
« on: September 27, 2019, 09:53:11 AM »
After all these years I am now bringing up that the name WYCO originated from a baseball field on Leavenworth Road. It is on North side of road just East of 435. I remember playing there as a kid. Who remembers Lyondotte Fields???  I think its spelled right?

The name of the disc golf course is just derived from the name of the park Wyandotte County Park, Bonner Springs. Also known locally as Bonner Park. The course earned the nickname WyCo first then that became the official name shortly after. The WYCO baseball park you refer to is similarly named but that's short for Wyandotte County Sports Association. It's on Leavenworth Road around 101st Street and that location is the headquarters of the association.

Liondotte (correct spelling) Baseball Park is long gone. It was on 67th Street near the corner of 67th and Cernech, right next to a man-made hill where a water tower once stood. I know all this as I grew up at 6930 Cernech, just blocks from the two-field baseball park. I spent many many fun summer nights hanging out at Liondotte, whether playing cup-ball with friends, watching the games, sometimes working in the snack shack, and one season even playing on the smaller field of the two when I was on a local team. I also climbed the water tower many times and used to enjoy sitting on the very top and watching airplanes come and go at KCI off in the distance. The last time I drove by there Liondotte was overgrown and no longer in use, and hadn't been in a very long time. Likewise the water tower was dismantled years ago as well.
