Found a few morels at Blue Valley today

About two years ago I was playing cliff drive and I could smell fruit on hole 5 or 6. (The steep one up the hill where the basket is right on top of the hill. I still don't have the numbers straight since the renumbering.) I started looking around for the fruit and found some wild paw paws. They were delicious. I got about fifteen of them and had to climb a couple of trees. I haven't seen them there since then. Paw paws are about the size of a potato and taste like papaya but are completely native to Missouri.

I've been trying to grow a stinkin' paw paw in my yard for 3 years now.  I've killed one tree, and the second I thought died, and then grew a shoot the next year.  I'm totally playing Cliff Drive next fall.

Don't morels go for $30-35+ per pound at the supermarket? 

 you cant buy them at the supermarket and think more along the lines of about $25-65 a lb..

My guess is the paw-paw tree is still there. It's worth looking for. They are kind of rare. I've only run across one once. I see a lot of persimmon trees though. There's one in the middle of the fairway on #8B at USM that we eat fruit from for weeks every year.

I've seen them at 2 grocery stores here in Lawrence - Checkers and The Merc - pretty rare though.  I imagine that local 'shroom hunters are the suppliers.  There's a local DG'r dude that works at Liberty Hall that's a hunter...and will bring in his findings to Free State in exchange for meal vouchers.  Pretty cool!

Have to keep an eye out for the paw paws at Cliff. I've enjoyed the berries at WW many times....  good stuff.

I did some landscaping for a professor at Mizzou who was able to grow Paw Paw trees. He had one in his yard. He had all the fruit covered with mesh, because he said that the wildlife would eat them. I'm surprised to hear that someone found fruit in the ones at Cliff. I've seen them on the ground, but have yet to see any ripe on the tree. I'll be morel hunting tomorrow AM!

Found some near the most recent stiff at CD today...maybe that's what makes them grow   Lil garlic and parmesan in butter; oooooh DAAAMN!!
