Winter apparel
« on: December 04, 2009, 09:04:03 AM »
Just recently started playing again this summer and am loving the KC community scene.  However, was curious what you Winter league men (and women) bring so your hands don't fall off out there.

I played a couple weeks ago when it was around ~40° and windy, and every time I would drive my fingers would hurt (sting) pretty badly.  Was looking for some tips on how to avoid this, or what you guys might bring to stay warm out there and still enjoy your game.

How well do fingerless gloves work out?  I'm assuming they would work relatively well, but you lose some grip and control.  Hand warmers?  A flask of whiskey?

When I'm throwing in really cold weather I keep a hand warmer in my throwing hand pocket and a glove on the non-throwing hand. Then I keep my throwing hand in my pocket as much as possible when I'm not throwing. I know some people that throw with a glove on but I have never had any luck doing that no matter what kind of glove I try (and my game relies heavily on luck).

Sounds like we need to have a tournament where everyone is blindfolded and has to throw with mittens on.  Luckiest man wins!

Use mittens! A mitten with a hand warmer in the bottom works much better than a glove. It's like slipping your hand into a little hand oven after every throw.

I use Hot Hands in my hoodie pocket, just keep my hands in there between throws. Under Armor Cold Gear and Wigwam snowboarding socks have also helped make the cold weather rounds more enjoyable. The UA stuff is expensive, but well worth it, IMO. I said I'd never pay that much for base layers but caught some on sale a few weeks back and it's the best money I've spent on winter gear. Of course, I hunt a lot this time of year so I get double use out of all that stuff.

I have one of thouse pouches that you see QBs in the NFL wear. it was about 30 bucks at a hunting store and worth every penny.  lightwieght and very warm
