28th Annual Wide Open - Countdown to 30

The 28th Annual Kansas City Wide Open is scheduled as a PDGA B-Tier for June 19-20. Registration information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks. This Wide Open is being co-produced this year by Disc Golf World (Rick Rothstein) of Kansas City and Dynamic Discs (Jeremy Rusco) of Emporia, KS.

Jeremy and I will be making some decisions soon about formats, but wanted to use this forum to get some feedback from people who play PDGA events. We're pretty locked in that everyone will play 4 18-hole rounds, but we're not certain about how many courses each division should play.

Which of the scenarios to you prefer and why?

1. To play 4 courses. One round on each course.

2. To play 2 courses: Two rounds on each course.

3. To play 3 courses. Two rounds on one course and one round on each of the other two courses.

An argument for playing a course a second time is that it gives the player another shot at the course. This could be making amends after a less-than-stellar first round. Or it could be showing one's mastery by shredding the courses a second time. For travelers new to KC, trying to practice fewer courses takes less time.

An argument for more courses is variety. KC is famous for its courses, so it's a good thing to let people sample more tracks.

Anyway, any and all feedback is appreciated.

I like #1 because:

If you are hyping this up to be a big attraction for the next 3 years it's good to show our versatility as a town with our wide range of courses.  Also being able to cater to an infinite amount of people is great.  Also this is golf, so in my opinion you need to make the golfer show all of his skills on each course with out some sort of redemption.  What is this the NBA series?  The "I'll show up 2 of the 3 games I play"!  NO golf.  Show up or go home.  <- I don't know if I really feel this way but it sounded good at the time. 

I do believe that you should make sure everyone gets at least 1 of our touted "Championship" courses to each group.  WW - Wyco - Cliff - Blue Valley (short - it's more fun)

I'm liking either 1 or 3. We have too many good courses not to use at least 3 of them.

I think # 3 would be good.  The first two rounds could be at one course, with the final two rounds at separate courses, thus "equalizing" the field going into the final rounds.

My guess is number of players is based on number of courses? 90 x # of courses

Because attempting to further growth into the future is a factor, I think leaving people with a taste in their mouths for wanting to come back and beat a course the next year is a good idea. Don't give them instant gratification.  That aside, I agree with everyone else. We have too many good courses to waste.

Being from out of town, I'd rather play fewer courses.  Play the best 2x if necessary.  Or the 2 you want to highlight.  running all over the place is no fun if you don't know where you're going.  Stress is the enemy! 

Less driving, less courses to practice makes it a much more efficient (do-able, probable etc) event to travel for.

As an out of towner, I'd vote for 4 courses.  I'd definitely want to play Blue Valley and Water Works.  It wouldn't matter what the other 2 were.

Let me amend.  As an out of towner who isn't going to win I'd vote for 4 courses.  If I were concerned about winning I would want to play Cliff 4 times.

Or how about this with 3 courses:  two different courses the first day, and the same course the second day...moving pins and maybe even some "Safari" holes for the final round.

i would like to see 4 different courses. this is b/c i know my favorite tournaments are the ones that see the most
a town has to offer. with the proliferation of different courses in this town, it would be a shame to not see the
best of the best. i would love to see BV, Cliff on sat. and Rosie, WW on sunday.

as an out of towner am, I would definately vote for a 3 or 4 course option. 

You guys are like us up here in Des Moines--too many great courses to use only a couple.  You have your other course specific tournaments for that.  This is the KC Wide Open, whether it's a C Tier or an NT it should be your "showcase KC courses" event, IMO.

I also vote that the 4 courses should be Swope, Cliff, Wyco, and Waterworks.

So who is merchandising this event DGW, or DD?
