Updated for the week.  We've had over 300 unique players this year at league.

When calculating player ratings, do you drop a certain percentage of bad rounds like the PDGA?

No.  The PDGA drops rounds that are 2.5 standard deviations away from a player's average.  This is easier to do through automation (like the PDGA) than manually (like us).

I tried to figure a way to do this in the Excel spreadsheet in 2008 when I was doing these. It's NOT easy, and I hadn't actually figured out a good, clean way to do it.  I think having all the info in an Access database (or something similar) is the way to go, giving multiple options for display, etc.  But frankly, it's a lot of work just to keep up the spreadsheet, much less try to build a sophisticated delivery system or drop rounds ala PDGA. Kudos to Mr. Timko for keeping track of the ratings.

I'm only doing ratings through August.  Then I'm investing time in designing a solution so league coordinators can input values and all calculations will happen behind the scenes.  Most likely a web solution with a database backend.  Excel isn't meant to do complex calculations like that.

Agreed.  That sounds like a pretty elegant solution.  I don't have the IT background to make any of that happen. I can code in Pascal, FORTRAN, and a couple of other dead computer languages, but I haven't done any of that in a number of years.

I'm in the initial design stages, but I should have some form of round and ratings reporting tool by the beginning of league next year.  Hopefully, it will expound to allow users to log in and view their stats in the 2nd iteration.

But yea, it's going to be an ass load of work.

you're awesome timko, but couldn't you delegate the scores/ratings data entry to the person running the league?

I think the idea is to make it a unified, cohesive system- the TDs will probably be responsible for entry once the programming is finished, but not much else.

I'd love to, but I don't know how many people would spend an extra 15-30 minutes each week calculating round ratings.

even if only one did it, it'd save you time! start by having only one thread to post league scores, accessed only by authorized personnel for data entry but for all to view

All the info is on a google doc, so I'd just have to give them collaboration rights to edit it.

Timko, just so you know, Rivard, Jay is currently rated Harris, Steve. Is that some sort of super-gold designation?
