actually, that computer language you're talking about is COBOL.  i should know; i was conditioned in college to be a COBOL programmer.  that's why CMSU churned out so many CIS/CS grads; to maintain all the legacy COBOL/mainframe systems that companies were too cheap to upgrade.

cobol.  that brings back some funny memories.  when i was at cerner in the late 90's they still trained folks in cobol. 

i don't even know what used it for

My bad, I knew it when I was typing it, but then I couldnt make enough profit margins with the AS400 and CObol guys so I went to OOO geeks and nerds to make my money and look to the future, those AS400 Cobol folks margin was to thin to eek a profit in my consulting business.....
