CD, I hope you don't mind some additional info. I'm a bit of an aquarium hobbyist.
FYI... these are both pretty aggressive species of fish. Especially the males. But the larger the tank, the better off they'll do with other fish. If you put them in a tank < 55 gal. or so with other fish, they'll fight relentlessly. If the other fish are smaller, they'll be dead, or at the least their fins will be shredded before long.
But both are pretty neat fish to have on their own. They'd be fine with others in a big enough tank. The jewel cichlid can get really beautiful with good tank conditions. Convicts get their name because of the black stripes on their sides. Convicts are diggers too, they'll rearrange your tank if they don't like the layout. If the Convicts have paired though, then look out, they can be real monsters. They're twice as mean once they've paired up, and will constantly fight anything else in the tank.
They're both pretty easy to care for. And they'll eat just about any type of fish food. Both are pretty hardy.
