Spring Renewal
« on: February 09, 2005, 12:26:58 PM »
Due to popular demand the Swope Spring Renewal will be returning to our beloved Gully Golf Course. The date being tossed around is May 14th, since that is Mother's Day all mothers will play free.  Since this date is less than a month before the Wide Open it should also serve as a tuneup for the big show.
Watch this space for workdate postings, in the meantime help improve your course by picking up trash. (Hint: cigarette butts are trash).
We'll be recycling as much of the aluminum as possible this year, the money will come back to the Tuesday league in October.

have a big one,

Woo Hoo.......The Spring Renewal is coming back after a few years of neglect. That's great to hear. I love the date as well as it co-insides with my 30th birthday. Please keep me informed on work days, or anything else needed to make this event happen.

Please do "Your" part in keep our courses green. Pick up trash that you see laying on the ground even if you didn't put it there. Cigerette butts are the number one pollutant in the U.S. So if you smoke on the course, please just knock the cherry off and put the butt in a thrash can or your golf bag and if you don't want to get your bag dirty put them in your pocket. I spent a considerable amount of time the last two years picking up other people's cigarette butts.

Remember the Parks and Rec giveth and the Parks and Rec taketh away!

dr. jack lowe and I attended a meeting 2/17 about the Master Plan for swope.
the overall improvements to the park will have little impact on the course itself. there are plans to make the intersection of elmwood and gregory safer and landscape the corner around 16.

as part of the Front Door District, "...landscaped open spaces, Starlight Theater, the Zoo, daily use amenities, and historical elements.", the description and recommendations for the disc golf course: "The rolling terrain and dense tree canopy of this area have become home to a top flight 18-hole disc golf course. The course hosts many professional disc golf tournaments as well as regional and local tournaments.
Recommendations:
Construct two small ponds to serve as water hazards for the course; and Provide new tree plantings for planned succession of the existing mature trees."
we also brought to their attention the hillsides that seem to have broken water lines. maybe we should have a get together for the parks folks when things warm up, give them a chance to walk the course.

as an aside, jack told me that 5/14 is the date of the city's biggest disc golf day being held at rosedale. watch this space for more info.

WOW sounds like some great things are about to happen at the city's oldest course.

How about moving the Spring Re-Newal to March 26th or April 2/3rd?
Or should I give up on playing a tournament there altogether this year?
Not playing in the Wide Open, and just wanted to get an old tradition going again.

NAME THAT TOURNAMENT!
« Reply #4 on: February 22, 2005, 09:13:36 AM »
due to both ignorance and indifference on the part of your course custodian we need to find a new name for the spring gala.
in the interest of evolution I am proposing a naming contest, the winner getting free entry into the tournament. all kansas residents are excluded given that in that state evolution is but theory.
all suggestions can be posted here or thrown at us at the park.
spin on!

What's up with the name?
« Reply #10 on: February 23, 2005, 11:13:52 AM »
um, Maurice?   Would you please ask Stiles to post what happened with the name?

the Summer Solstice ain't until June, so that's no problem.  Surely no one trademarked "Swope Spring Fling"?

but, no matter what, how about the Mother Of All Disc Days Tournament, Social, and Beer Blast?

Fling What you Bring, In Spring @ Swope!!!

Or how about for those who prefer generic productions SWOPE SPRING TOURNY.

A lot of responces for what I was told is a dead tournament.
Glad to see there is still interest out there. Even got pete to chime in, how bout it. Keep it up guys.

the original name is still intact. since the course is evolving it seems only fitting that the words chosen to lure eager participants do so as well.

how bout the Swope Spring Fling Zing Sling Bling Wing Ding A Go Go?
hopefully Ching will be one of the sponsors.

I vote for this one.

Quote from: 1) - The 1st Annual Spring Fling Bling Bling and Cookie Toss.

We can sell discs, tee-shirts and bumper stickers that say:
"I tossed my cookies at The 1st Annual Spring Fling Bling Bling"

Let's go with something we'll be proud of in 30 years.
