Wednesday at USM

The USM crew missed playing at our home course so much last night we have decided to schedule a Wednesday round this week (7/25/12).

Last night's field trip to Old Pike was a resounding success. We had a blast. Tony and his partner, Elliot Hicks, shot a nice 48 while Andy and his partner, me, shot a not so hot 52. But we got to see that sweet Ace on #6 thanks to a great shot by my good friend Matt "Swade Swede" Eklund. And we followed the round with some great food on the grill - Fenton's chorizo sausages were freakin' amazing!! Sorry we missed out on the burgers - they looked great - but we had to begin our trek back to Leavenworth County.

Interesting fact....  It was random draw but out of everyone there all of the USM related people ended up paired up. Andy Jewett (senior admissions counselor) and me (system administrator) were randomly paired and Tony Todd (head carpenter) and Elliot Hicks (parent of incoming USM freshman, Frosty) were randomly paired. Coincidence?! yeah, probably....   

So, anywho....  how's about y'all join us today if you're able... teeing around 5:30-6.....

We'll be teeing off about 6pm this week at USM (8/22). There will be a welcome back BBQ going on for returning students so we plan to throw a round to try and get the students interested in the course. Depending on interest we may BBQ after the round as well.

Sorry for the confusion if anyone made it out yesterday. I had to work late and the other USM crew took a field trip to OP for some prime rib.

There is a welcome back to campus BBQ going on at 5pm so parking may be interesting and we may have to wait until the crowd dies down to throw #1. Let me know if you plan to make it up.

Another change of plans for USM this evening. We'll be teeing off from the Oak Kiln tonight with a couple of temp placements in play. We did this last year a few times and it worked great. This will allow us to avoid the crowd over by #1 completely until we get around to tee #2.

If you are coming up and need directions to the oak kiln area just let me know. Basically, you come in the main paved entrance that is south of the brick road entrance, then take a right toward the top of the hill on a small gravel side-road that goes down toward the baseball field. Parking will be easier and we should pretty much have that area to ourselves.

It was an interesting evening at USM last night. Six of us for a round that included two temp holes that supplanted #1/#10 that was unplayable due to the big welcome back BBQ that was going on. This made for 20 holes so we used one of the holes to replace a higher score on the front nine then again on the back nine. So after the front nine if you shot a 3 or 4 on the bonus hole and had a 4 or 5 on the front nine you could replace that score with the better score. We did that again on the back nine. It made things a little interesting.

But the real highlight came when we were playing the second time through on the first temp hole, Where the basket was placed had a round storm drainpipe running straight out into the field with no grate over it. Tony had an outstanding drive and was probably 100' out. He launched his Wizard and instead of heading for the basket it literally flew right into this 18" pipe. Didn't hit the sides or anything, flew right in. We had a flashlight and Andy climbed in as far as he could and we couldn't see it. It had to have flown 20'-30'+ right into that pipe from 30'-40' out. Played it as a lost disc and moved on. One of the craziest things I've seen happen on a disc golf course.

Shortly after that a couple of visitors trying the course out for the first time caught up with us making it and eight-some.  Kyler and Rachel were throwing USM for the first time and finished the bulk of the back nine with us. Nice meeting you both. Hope you had fun.
