I believe Micah did bring out a keg of beer this year...

Not sure if there is some ongoing notes for IB 2014, we may want to ask 75th Street Brewery, or ManKind brewery for beer donations.  While I don't personally know Micah Weichert of ManKind, what I do know of him and comments I've heard from people that know him personally, donating beer for charity would seem to be right up his alley.

Here a long list of most the people who made the KC Ice Bowl possible. We're down about 65 people from last year. The final donation number to be announced as the deadline for pledge sheets is this weekend. Right now we're in the the $6000-$6500 range. Not too shabby.

Good morning,

I want to bring something up about how the tournament was run, but want to say up front that I'm not upset at all.  As someone who has put in countless (literally) hours in a non-profit organization over 7+ years, I greatly appreciate hard work done by volunteers.  Still, if issues are not reviewed or discussed then improvement will not happen.

When I signed up for Ice Bowl on 1/17 at the store, I forgot to notate if I was playing Sat, Sun, 1 round or 2.  Dick graciously called me on my mobile asking which I replied two rounds on Sunday.

When I checked in on Sunday AM, I informed them I was playing two rounds.

When I turned in the round card, nothing was said.  One of the volunteers (name purposely not given) gave me the card back 15 minutes later asking who was and wasn't playing 2nd round.  I found all 5 other players, marked the card with a Y or N next to name and turned it back in.  My name was marked Y.

During lunch, my name was called out as double checking on second round.  I checked in again stating I was playing 2nd round, this with a 2nd different volunteer (again name left out on purpose - but I know them all by name)

Sometime later, as my double checking personality started to kick in, I checked in again to make sure.

Then when the cards/groups were posted, my card was missing.  I asked a third volunteer about it and was told to jump in on a card and have them write my name down, which I did.

I now see in the scores above (Rob Martin) that my second round score was not recorded.

So...I checked in / or informed four different people a total of six different times.  My 2nd card was not retained and my score was not recorded.

If this was a PDGA tournament, I would be pissed as hell.  Since this was a benefit and didn't have any real significance, I'm slightly annoyed but not offended.  It is easy to criticize from the outside, but all of the volunteers definitely looked like they were working their ass off, which is EXTREMELY appreciated.  I sincerely mean this when I say, THANK YOU.

My point is, all of us should strive to improve how we do things, running a tournament, etc.  Heck, the day afterwards, I posted on how we could improve the beer donations and contacted 4 people on helping me to brew next years homebrew donation.  I intend to personally get involved in the beer donations next year to try to get some fresh faces (ManKind, etc.).

I'll be back for next years Ice Bowl...with a larger contribution of homebrew.  Let's try to improve the retention of who's playing and who isn't and the scores they throw.

Suffice it to say this wasn't a tournament that everything gets crossed and double checked.  This is an event to get people out of their houses in the middle of the winter and remember why we have a good community here.

The ultimate goal is for us to provide to the charities to show that we are ambassadors of our sport that loves to give back to our community.

I bet that had you sent a private note to any of the people running the event they would have corrected the error and included your second round score.  Since there really isn't a prize for any place, score is subjective at best.  I bought 22 mulligans for crying out loud....so my score represents what I bought and used (I had 7 left over) but isn't a true reflection on my playing on the day.

With all that being said, I am sure the scores can be corrected.  This event should be about anything other than having a fun time out in the park on a cold winters day.  If it were to be taken seriously, it would be a tournament, and not an event.  This is an event!  The tourneys are right around the corner, and if those issues happen then by all means step up and scream it, but for the Ice Bowl....lets move ahead and figure out why we didn't have as many people this year, and what we can do to have more next year!
