I'm CD Steiner, and I approve this message  :o

It's not because I am tall. It's because I have developed that shot over time.
In short, practice, practice, practice. I like to unload my bag a couple times from the fifty-yard line and then go throw a few holes.

Okay. I've heard from more than a few of you about the "reach back" technique and I think there needs to be some clarity.

The "reaching" part is, in fact, a twist of the torso and a trick of the eye. Do not, in fact, "reach" back. If you look at the videos, the arm is not extended back, it "falls" back as the body twists at the waist. It appears to reach, but it does not. Then, as the body twists back around to the front, it "pulls" the arm forward. (do not jerk your arm, just let it accelerate naturally. It's hard to diagram this without showing you, but please, do not REACH. Just let your body twist.

I hope that helps.

In my case, I would say, too, that there is an extent where there should be a reach (i.e. a visible weight shift AND a straight arm). Often I am too far forward or straight up and down on the reach back and my elbow is slightly bent.

But yes, you do have to use your hips to reach.

Reaching back is cheating the twist of your body. The twist is where the strength is found. Work on the twist, not the reach.

By far, the most important part of any shot is what is happening in the last split second as the disc is pulling itself from your grip. Focus there. It's the key.

For those of you trying to learn how to throw a sidearm, or anyone who throws one, I recommend Dave's sidearm video:

Dave's Tips | Driving - Sidearm

One of his main points, the need for a "strong sudden steely snap of the wrist" as you release, really helped improve my forehand throw, and I had already been throwing lots of forehand throws for over 7 years when I watched it. I see a lot of new players or even experienced players who are trying to develop this throw use way too much arm, and this video really helps demonstrate that it is all about that sudden wrist snap.

Also check out his "snake strike" putting video!

I just realized that ol' Dave must have a serious Viagra induced  hard-on for alliteration using the letter "s".

So all this time I've been doing the "twist"? My wife will be so proud when I tell her I really can dance.

Big thanks to Loomis!!!!  I have worked on what you have taught me every day since we meet.  I played my first game since that day up at water works and even though my score was horrid I felt I played the best game I have ever played!  Now it is back to the practice field for me but although I may be inconsistent I felt I made far better decisions and when I missed it was because I either tried to throw it or because I used my front finger.  I just wanted you to know how much it meant so much for you and (Mina?) to take time to pass on your knowledge to me.  You are a wonderful and patient teacher!!!!  Andy (My Brother) was very jealous, but I have tried to pass on what I learned as best I could.
Thanks,
